What Is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism (within normal limits). These important functions, as well as all body functions, are controlled by the central nervous system, which consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the nerves of the body. Because the central nervous system has the important job of transmitting messages from the brain to the rest of the body, it must be protected. The delicate tissues of the brain are protected by the skull; the communication pathways of the spinal cord and nerve roots are protected by the moving bones of the spine. The joints of the spine can often become fixated or lose their normal motion, which irritates the nerves that exit the spine to serve muscles and organs. Chiropractic restores normal spinal and joint motion, which reduces nerve irritation, resulting in pain reduction.

Chiropractic examinations involve a full history of the patient's complaint, as well as a thorough physical examination of the biomechanics of the spine and related muscles, to determine areas of improper spinal motion. A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific force, in a precise direction, applied to a joint that has lost its normal motion. This restores motion to the joint and acts to reduce the pain and spasm associated with a fixated joint.

The type of adjustments that you will receive at the Spruce Grove Chiropractic Centre is hands-on manipulation, also called the Diversified Technique. Your chiropractor has trained for four years using this technique and believes it to be the most effective for restoring proper motion in the spine. If you are not comfortable with this technique, please advise your chiropractor, and he will modify his technique to make you more comfortable or will refer you to a doctor of chiropractic who uses a technique more suitable to your needs.

Just like regular dental check-ups help to reduce your risk of a cavity, regular chiropractic check-ups (once every month or once every two months) can help to reduce your chances of having an acute episode of joint-related pain. Much of chiropractic research is related to the alleviation of symptoms, but regular spinal check-ups can help reduce the risk of requiring acute care. Everyday activities such as reaching, stretching, walking, sitting, sneezing, or coughing can place stress on the bones and muscles of the spine and cause painful symptoms. It is because of these daily stressors that your chiropractor will recommend regular check-ups; however, the choice is always up to you as to how much benefit you want to obtain from chiropractic care.
Should you have any further questions about the discipline of chiropractic or your chiropractor's philosophy of care, please do not hesitate to discuss them with your chiropractor at your next appointment.
